Beef Hand Pies
These pastry filled beef hand pies are always a favorite in our home. Served alone as a quick lunch or served with gravy and side they never disappoint.
Ingredients
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 medium onion chopped
- 2 tbsp avocado oil
- 1 tbsp pressed garlic
- 4 tbsp all purpose flour
- 1 1/2 cup frozen mixed vegetables
- 2 tbsp better than beef broth
- 2 cup hot water
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tsp dried thyme
- 1/2 tsp oregano
- salt and pepper to taste
- 3 single pie crusts I double my pastry recipe and put 1 single crust in the freezer for another time
- 1 egg beaten
- 1 tbsp water
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 450 degrees
- To a large pan add the avocado oil and onion, saute on medium heat for 5 minutes
- Add the beef to the pan and brown, cook thoroughly
- While the beef is cooking add the better than beef broth to the hot water and stir to dissolve
- Add the garlic and stir for about a minute
- Add the flour and cook while stirring constantly for about 4 minutes
- Quickly pour in the broth and stir continually until the gravy is well blended and thickening, add the mixed vegetables
- Add the Worcestershire sauce, Thyme, oregano and salt and pepper
- Remove the filling from the heat and allow it to cool down. If the filling is too hot it will soften your pastry dough making it hard to work with.
- Roll out one pie crust at a time, I use a cereal bowl as my template, place the bowl on the pastry and using a paring knife cut out your circle, I usually get three circles out of my dough. Remove unused dough and set aside
- Beat the egg and 1 Tbsp of water together and using a pastry brush go around the edge of each circle
- Add 1 heaping Tbsp of filling just left off the center of the pastry, gently fold the pastry over the filling making a crescent shape. Use a fork to crimp the edges and place on a parchment lined sheet pan
- Repeat the steps until you have used all of the dough and filling. I get 12 hand pies.
- When I have 6 hand pies on the baking sheet I bake them for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown
