Chocolate Thumbprint Cookies

If there’s one cookie guaranteed to disappear first, it’s these chocolate thumbprints—rich, irresistible, and a longtime family favorite at Christmas.

Ingredients

Cookies

  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1 cup softened butter
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 egg
  • 2 1 4 cup all purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa
  • 2 tsp grated orange peel
  • 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 3 Tbsp sugar
  • 1/2 cup jam, jelly or marmalade

Glaze

  • 1/4 cup semi sweet chocolate chips
  • 2 Tbsp butter

Instructions

Cookies

  • Heat the oven to 325℉
  • In a stand mixer, combine the softened butter and sugar, and beat until light and fluffy.
  • Add the vanilla and egg and blend well.
  • Add the flour, cocoa, orange peel, and baking powder, mix well.
  • Shape the dough into 1-inch balls and roll in the 3 Tbsp of sugar.
  • Place on un-greased cookie sheets 2 inches apart.
  • With your thumb, make an indentation in the center of each cookie.
  • Fill the indentation with jam of choice; don't overfill.
  • Bake at 325℉ for 14-17 minutes or until firm to the touch.
  • Immediately remove the cookies from the cookie sheet to a cooling rack.
  • Cool completely.

Glaze

  • Melt the butter in the microwave or a double broiler, add the chocolate chips, and stir until melted.
  • Fill a small ziplock bag with the chocolate glaze, snip the tip, and drizzle the chocolate over the cooled cookies.
  • Allow the glaze to set and enjoy!
